We did it … we climbed “The Nut”

If you visit the town of Stanley in the North-West corner of Tasmania, a journey to the top of one of the island’s best known landmarks, “The Nut”, is a MUST.
For years there has been a chair lift, which really is needed by a large percentage of seniors, the infirm, and all of the down-right lazy. However that service is only available during the “tourist season”, and due to the appalling weather, this season’s opening was deferred from last weekend to next weekend, and of course we will be gone by then.
Despite Barbara’s protestations that the climb to the top (up a mostly 1 in 2 gradient pathway I should point out) was too hard, I eventually shamed her into making the effort, with a reminder of our promise to our doctor, Frank Rhodes of Moorabbin, that we would strip off at least 5kgs of avoirdupois by the time we returned to Melbourne.
The weather was absolutely perfect for the excursion ... bright sunshine … little wind … just a great Spring day. With so many scenic panoramas, naturally I took the Canon EOS 1000D. However we had already climbed the first third of the steep pathway to the top before I realised I really did need the second of the camera’s two lens, so I went back down to where RANNDY was parked and drove back to the van to get it, leaving Barbara sitting on bench, surveying the breath-taking scenery that surrounded us. She was also able to shoot pictures of the car going to and from the caravan from her vantage point. In a slide show in the blog’s side bar are all the pictures we took on the day.

To see them all in full screen size, just use your mouse pointer to click once or twice on the slide show and you should be taken to the Picasa website where you click on “View All” then “slide show” and key F11 should bring them up full size.

The picture above was taken on Sunday afternoon when it was wet and cold and the wind was so strong I was forced to sit on a bollard to prevent being blown into the water. Now here is a shot from the slide show taken from up on "The Nut" looking down at that bollard.

  1. You're a hard man, Mr Campbell! I'm sure the scenery more than made up for Barbara's initial concerns about the difficulty of the walk. Tassie is such a gorgeous place and we all hope your trip follows in this vein.
